Dear Parent or Guardian,

The Germantown School District has embraced the vision of Empowering and Inspiring Every Student to Success. To achieve this, our district must be able to identify and understand the unique individual learning needs of each student. One of the tools Germantown is using to identify individual learning is the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The results from the MAP assessments have practical application for teaching and learning as well as the ability to measure a student’s growth over time.

MAP assessments are administered to Germantown students in the fall, winter, and spring of each school year in grades 3 through 8 in the area of reading. Math will begin to be assessed in the spring of 2012.  After each testing session, you will be provided with your child’s score information through a Student Progress Report.

The Measures of Academic Progress assessment is only one of many learning indicators Germantown School District teachers utilize. Your child’s MAP scores are not intended to be used alone to measure your child’s learning. A variety of learning indicators is the best measure of your child’s learning progress and it is important to take into account all learning measures when looking at your child’s overall achievement.

Enclosed with this letter is your child’s winter MAP Student Progress Report. If this is your child’s first MAP assessment, you will not see your child’s scores in graphical form. Two or more assessment events are needed to create a graphical representation. Refer to the explanatory notes section in the lower right hand corner of this report to help you interpret the score information. When looking at your child’s scores over time, please note that it is not uncommon to see a dip in scores from spring to fall or a score that is out of sync with the others.

Focus on the overall trajectory of your child’s scores over time.

For additional information regarding the MAP assessment, visit the Germantown School District website at www.germantownschools.org, select Amy Belle>MAP located on the left side of the home page.  MAP information available on our website includes a MAP brochure, FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) sheet, district averages, Lexile information and a parent toolkit and information on understanding MAP scores.

Feel free to contact your child’s teacher or me with any questions about the MAP assessment.

Sincerely,

Maria Kucharski
